Somatostatin Receptor Phosphorylation Assays

Somatostatin receptors are activated by somatotropin-release inhibiting factor (SRIF) that exerts potent inhibitory actions on hormone secretion and neuronal excitability. The somatostatin receptor family consists of five members designated somatostatin receptors 1-5 (SST1-SST5). SST2 is the pharmacological target for octreotide (Sandostatin) which is the first line medical treatment for growth hormone (GH)-producing adenomas (acromegaly) and gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors (NET). SST5 is the primary pharmacological target for pasireotide (Signifor) which is the first line medical treatment for adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-producing adenomas (Cushing’s disease). In addition, SST2 is a prototypical GPCR for the development of peptide-based radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions of human tumors.
