VPAC1 is a receptor for VIP, PACAP-38 and -27. VPAC1 activity is mediated by Gs proteins. VPAC1 receptors are abundant in epithelial cells of the mucosa located in the basal portion of the crypts. VPAC1 receptor are also present in neurons of the mucosal plexus. The VPAC1 receptor is abundant in cancers of the breast, pancreas, and prostate, as well as in pituitary adenomas.
