The D2 receptor is a pharmacological target for drugs widely used to treat symptoms for disorders associated with dopaminergic dysfunctions, including Parkinson’s disease and schizophrenia. D2 is expressed on neuronal cell bodies and fibers in distinct regions of the central nervous system including caudate-putamen and nucleus accumbens. In the periphery, D2 is found in the endocrine system including anterior pituitary and enterochromaffine cells throughout the gut. D2 is also abundant in pituitary adenomas including prolactinomas and other neuroendocrine tumors.
