C5a1 is the specific receptor for the chemotactic and inflammatory peptide anaphylatoxin C5a. Receptor activation stimulates chemotaxis, granule enzyme release, intracellular calcium release and superoxide anion production in macrophages and other immune cells. The development of potent and selective antagonists has been proposed as a strategy for new anti-inflammatory drugs for diseases in which damage by neutrophils plays a key role. The C5a1 can be seen in the spleen, thymus, tonsils, lymph nodes and lung, where it is abundantly localized at the plasma membrane of macrophages and other immune cells.
